Born in Vinkovci, Croatia, Mirko Cro Cop, also known as Mirko Filipovic, first established himself as a Croatian amateur kickboxing champion, winning 40 of his 45 amateur fights. He also worked on the Croatian anti-terrorist squad as a commando.
He fought well on the K-1 circuit throughout the late 90s, most memorably defeating three opponents on the same night, while hiding the fact that he was fighting with broken ribs. He began fighting for Pride FC in 2001, and fought very well for them, until he made the shift to the UFC in December of 2006. After deciding that he preferred ring fighting to cage bouts, he moved to fighting with Dream in Japan. He subsequently returned to the UFC, and then chose to retire from MMA fighting in 2011. He has since returned to kickboxing on the K-1 circuit.
